Charlotte Wedding Photographer | Roof With A View | Shaynah + Michael

Last spring I had the pleasure to second shoot with my sister-in-law, the lovely Elisabeth Rose. Shaynah + Michael are good friends who we go to church with, so it was just an all-around great time. Second shooting is really a lot of fun because you’re free from the pressure to capture everything and you’re able to just relax and try new things. With all of the editing I had to do last year I never got around to these, so in honor of Shaynah + Michael’s one year anniversary today I decided to finally give them a go! Congratulations to you both and happy anniversary!

2010 Year In Review

Wow, I can’t believe it’s already 2011! With the coming of a new year I wanted to take some time to reflect on the past year as a photographer. I’m really grateful for the blessing of being able to do something that I love and have a passion for. 2010 was a very full year! I shot a total of 10 weddings (doubling my 2009 total). I worked really hard to define what I want to communicate as an artist and I feel like I nailed down that vision last year, both from an artistic and technical perspective. I believe this helped me to take my art to the “next level” last year, which is really exciting! My clients last year were wonderful and allowed me to be a part of some amazing weddings. If you were a client of mine in 2010, thank you so much for the privilege of being a part of your special day!

In short, 2010 was a huge step forward and I couldn’t be more excited for 2011! To wrap things up here are my favorite images from the past year.

Baby Sam

Our second child, Samuel Laurence, was born at 4:42 AM on Tuesday December 14th. He is such a blessing for our family! We think he’s super cute and I love taking pictures of him. Here are some quick portraits of Sam and mom that I did in the hostpital.

Charlotte Wedding Photographer | Bridal Portraits | Jeni on Film

The film portion of my recent bridal shoot with my sister Jeni. First time using Portra and I love how it looks! I love shooting with Jeni because she’s an artist and she really knows how to get her model on. Check these out…

Thoughts on Portra: properly overexposed (2 stops) skin tones look great. I love how this film seems to subtly saturate the skin tones without saturating the rest of the colors. Underexposed skin tones look pretty grey and yucky but that’s probably true of all film. Definitely has fine grain but I feel like I can see the grain more than with Fuji 400h which seems to give a smoother look overall. This is especially noticeable in the out-of-focus areas which tend to look harsh. That could just be the harsh bokeh that my cheapo 50mm produces. I would love to see what this film does with an 85mm f/1.4! Gotta keep saving my pennies…

Salisbury Wedding Photographer | Historic Train Depot | Jeni + Lee

A few of my favorite things…Historic locations. Vintage themes. Hand-crafted decorations. My sister.  Stylish couples. Friends and family. Fall light. Brides who know how to smile with their eyes. Lots of time for portraits. This wedding had all of these things and more. I think this was my most enjoyable wedding to date. I loved seeing my sister get married. I loved the setting, the decorations, the themes, the light, the amount of time we had for pictures, and shooting with 2 friends. I loved working extensively with different films for the first time. I loved how Jeni knew exactly what to do in front of the camera! Most of all I loved seeing how excited Jeni + Lee were, and how much they loved each other. My creative juices were really flowing and I LOVE the end results! I’m so excited to be able to share these, and I feel totally privileged to have been Jeni + Lee’s photographer!

Charlotte Wedding Photographer | Metropolitan Ballroom | Danielle + Frank

Danielle + Frank’s wedding is definitely one of my favorite weddings ever! Everything was well-planned and relaxed, and we had lots of time for pictures both before and after the ceremony. I felt complete freedom to be an artist, which was fun and refreshing. On top of that the fall light was AMAZING and Danielle + Frank were stunning in front of the camera! PLUS I started working some film (film!?) in to my workflow during this event and I’m here to tell you that I have fallen way in love with film. You’ll definitely be seeing a lot of it on this blog in the future.

The ceremony was held at St Gabriel’s on Providence Road, with the reception right across the street at Metropolitan Ballroom. What a great reception location! It’s a great room with abundant natural light. Here are some of my favorites from the day:

The stunning bride:

Frank looked super sharp!

The groomsmen showing off their gift from Frank: new watches!

Danielle + Frank have their “First Look”…

It was very emotional

The next two are film!

Love this one…

Married!

I don’t usually share the family photos on my blog, but the location and light that we found was just so amazing that I had to share these:

Beautiful reception details…

Danielle + Frank share their first dance…

What a great time! Danielle + Frank, thanks so much for letting me be a part of your special day! Congratulations, and best wishes for you in the future… – David
